This the largest gothic cathedral in the world: La catedral de Santa María de la Sede. The cathedral in Seville was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. Among the many Spanish cathedrals, the Seville Cathedral is a true national treasure.

According to legend, construction on the Seville Cathedral began at the beginning of the 15th century, in 1401. However, the first verifiable testimonies mention that the building began on this famous Spanish cathedral in 1433. The cathedral was build over the space where the Aljama Mosque once stood, destroyed when the city was re-conquered by the Christians.

This large, walled complex of honey-coloured stone buildings, situated on the Isla la Cartuja (named after the monastery itself; the word means “charterhouse”), has seen many ups and downs during its long, dramatic history. From monks who welcomed Christopher Columbus, to barracks for Napoleon’s troops, ceramic factory run by an Englishman producing world-renowned porcelain, to modern-day contemporary art gallery and open-air live music venue.

The 16th-century monastery consists of a magnificent entrance gate with surrounding grounds and lake; domed church with various chapels and Mudejar cloisters; numerous patios; refectory with wood coffered ceiling; crypt; chapterhouse with tombs; and a beautiful walled garden with fruit trees and a small Mudejar torreon (tower) with mirador offering views over the river Guadalquivir to the city. There is a café with an attractive outdoor seating area, which is never too crowded with tourists as few venture over here. It’s a well-kept secret.

This magnificent bullring is considered to be one of the finest in Spain and is one of the oldest and most important in the world. Although many of the younger generation in Spain abhor the sport, it remains phenomenally popular, especially in Seville, and the 'Catedral del Toreo' is the perfect place to experience the electric atmosphere of a corrida (bullfight).

The building, with its impressive Baroque façade, dates from 1762 -1881 (under a succession of architects) and was immortalized in Bizet's Carmen. The arena accommodates 14,000 and, despite its size, the acoustics allow you to hear everything wherever you're sitting.

The main entrance is the Puerta del Príncipe (the Prince's Gate) with beautiful 16th-century iron gates, originally from a convent, made by Pedro Roldán. After an outstanding performance the torero (bullfighter) will be carried out through these gates on the audience's shoulders. Look out for the slight slope in the arena; it's higher in the centre than near the stalls to give the bullfighter an advantage - he can sprint downhill to get behind the barricade, while the bull has to come to a stop to avoid crashing into it.
